Sylfirm X, Morpheus8 and Potenza: How RF Microneedling Devices Differ

RP Clinical Team2 min read

Sylfirm X, Morpheus8 and Potenza are all radiofrequency (RF) microneedling devices. Each one places fine needles into the skin and releases radiofrequency energy at a set depth. Where they differ is in how that energy is delivered, and that affects which skin concerns each is usually chosen for.

At RP Clinic we use Sylfirm X. A first session is $399 nett, performed by our doctor, with your doctor's consultation, Visia skin analysis and a full-face session included.

What all three have in common

RF microneedling works on two levels at once: the micro-channels prompt the skin's repair response, and the heat delivered below the surface supports collagen remodelling. All three devices are used for acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture and skin laxity, and all three involve some redness and downtime afterwards.

Sylfirm X

Sylfirm X can deliver energy in two modes. Continuous-wave delivery is used where the aim is texture, scarring and firmness. Pulsed-wave delivery releases energy in very short bursts and is generally used where vascular and pigment-related concerns are involved, such as persistent redness and, with caution, melasma.

Being able to work on texture and on redness or pigment-related concerns within one plan is the main reason it is chosen.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is known for treating at greater depths, including the deeper layers beneath the skin. It is commonly chosen where the aim is firming and contouring as well as surface texture. Deeper treatment usually means more downtime.

Potenza

Potenza offers both monopolar and bipolar radiofrequency and a range of tip types, which allows the energy and depth to be varied across different areas and concerns within one device.

Which device suits which concern

The device matters less than the plan behind it. Needle depth, energy level, delivery mode and the number of sessions are set for your skin, and the same device can deliver a gentle session or an intensive one. What you are treating is the first question, and the device follows from that.

  • Acne scars and texture: all three are used; depth and course length matter more than the brand.
  • Redness or pigment-related concerns alongside texture: this is where a pulsed-wave mode, as on Sylfirm X, is usually considered.
  • Firming and contouring as the main aim: deeper treatment may be considered, and other treatments such as HIFU may also be discussed.

A note on melasma

Melasma can be unpredictable with any energy-based treatment and can worsen with aggressive settings. If you have melasma, it needs to be assessed before any RF microneedling course is planned.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Which device, which mode, and what depth for my skin?
  • Who performs the treatment?
  • How many sessions, at what interval, and when do we reassess?
  • What downtime should I plan for?

At RP Clinic, these are answered during your consultation, before anything is agreed. We are at Level 4, Tang Plaza, 310 Orchard Road, directly above Orchard MRT, open daily 10:00–20:00.
